Edmonton Expo: Strong with both the Star Wars and onscreen DC canon, the three-day fandom convention Edmonton Expo is back this weekend, including Artist Alley, The Cosplay Craftsmanship Cup, an interactive Family Zone — and of course all the creator, voice actor and celebrity guests!
C-3P0 himself — Anthony Daniels — Star Trek’s Jonathan Frakes, The Flash’s Grant Guston, two Boba Fett actors (Temuera Morrison and Episode II’s Daniel Logan), Futurama/Mad TV’s Phil Lamarr, Bitsie Tulloch and Tyler Hoechlin of Superman & Lois and many more will be doing panels, autographs and photos.
Plus, as always, the fan-made costumes and people-watching are totally bonkers, and the event is finally fully licensed.
If you’ve never been, make it so!
Details: 4 p.m. — 9 p.m. Fri., 10 a.m. – 7 p.m. Sat., 10 a.m. — 5 p.m. Sun. at Edmonton Expo Centre (7515 118 Ave.), $89/3-Day Pass, single days start at $34/adult, $29/youth
The Devil’s Sons: Big gig Friday night for this hardworking, hardcore punk-metal-psychobilly band, celebrating both 10 years together and especially the release of their third and brand-new album, Now and at the Hour of Death!
Happily, homecoming in the middle of a cross-Canada campaign, Brad Graves, Johnny Crash and the boys will share the evening of thunder and lightning with Famous Strangers, Barb Wire Choker, and Western Death Ballads.
Be there or be unbruised!
Details: 7 p.m. Fri. at Starlite Room (10030 102 St.), $25.94 at starliteroom.ca
Caligula: The Ultimate Cut (1980): Keeping up today’s theme of violence as entertainment (what do you think drives all those pop-culture stories?), Tom Brass’ restored, re-cut, and truly demented tale of Roman imperial power without guardrails is a sight to behold, playing Saturday.
Malcolm McDowell plays the titular character as he leaps into a self-destructive swirl of depravity and destruction amid truly beautiful set and costume design.
Not for the weak of heart, this 178-minute single showing is rated R for rather ruthless.
Details: 8:15 p.m. Sat. at Metro Cinema (8712 109 St.), $14
